This month one of our chapter members, Katie Narvarte, shares with us a local resource that provides an amazing summer camp opportunity to children who have had a parent diagnosed with cancer:

"Being a child of a parent affected by cancer can be tough. Unlike most children, these kids are often worried, forced to mature quickly, and take on more responsible roles at home-all while trying to be a happy-go-lucky kid. Many kids experiencing a parent’s cancer experience isolation from peers, low academic performance, loss of social interest, and taking on adult roles. Camp Kesem is a nationwide community, driven by passionate college student leaders, that supports children ranging from 6- 18 years of age, through and beyond their parent’s cancer. Camp Kesem is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting children impacted by a parent’s cancer, at no cost to families. Our innovative and fun-filled programs provide children with peers who understand their unique needs and create long-lasting impact. At camp, the kids are able to disaffiliate from the burden of their parent’s cancer and enjoy being a kid- all while bonding with their counselors and their fellow campers in similar circumstances.

Camp Kesem at The University of Texas - Dallas chapter emerged in 2016, serving as the only Camp Kesem chapter in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The counselors and coordinator board plan a week at camp consisting of games, talent/fashion shows, and various outdoor adventures! Camp counselors train and raise funds year-round for the “Best Week Ever”. This magical experience is not only for the kids but also for the counselors. The bonds you create at this camp are like no other and we are proud to be a part of it. Camp Kesem at the University of Texas - Dallas has grown so much- from serving 25 kids in 2016 to hopefully 90 kids this summer! We are so proud of our growth and hope to have as many children experience the Kesem Magic."
