January's Resource in the Limelight
Posted over 5 years ago by Katie Mccamey
This month's write-up for a wonderful community resource is from one of our members Alex Huffman, LCSW, OSW-C. She writes:
"Fly fishing may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about breast cancer recovery; however, that’s exactly what participants in Casting for Recovery (CFR)’s retreats will tell you aided in their healing! CfR’s unique program incorporates the gentle motion of fly casting, which can increase upper arm mobility, and the emotional benefits of connecting with nature to improve the quality of life for women impacted by breast cancer. CfR’s retreats are provided at no cost to participants and offer opportunities for women to find inspiration, discover renewed energy for life, and experience healing connections with other women and nature.
Each two and a half-day retreat includes fly fishing instruction and emotional support, ending with a half-day of guided catch-and-release fly fishing. The retreats are open to women with breast cancer of all ages, in all stages of treatment and recovery, and Texas offers three retreats for women, including one specific to women with a metastatic diagnosis. For over 20 years, women from all walks of life have benefitted from CfR’s inspiring and life-changing program model, and we look forward to supporting more women in 2020!"
