Mother's Day: A Celebration for Some, A Hard Day for Others

Posted 7 months ago

“Most of all the other beautiful things in life come by twos and threes, by dozens and hundreds. Plenty roses, stars, sunsets, rainbows, brothers, and sisters, aunts and cousins, but only one mother in the whole world.”  ~ Kate Douglas Wiggin

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, godmothers, fur baby mothers and the other maternal figures. Mothers deserve much more than one day a year, they deserve to be celebrated every day of the year.

Mother's Day can be a very happy event but not for everyone. There are many women who have struggles on this day: loss of children, including miscarriages, challenges with fertility, and loss of mothers, at any age. Maybe more than one of these. These women can be your patients and their families, your friends, your coworkers or maybe it's you.

Sending caring thoughts to all the women who may find Mother's Day difficult. Please know there are resources for you and that you are not alone.

Tips to help when Mother's Day is a difficult day

  1. Take a break from Social Medial and TV.
  2. Make a plan for the day including doing things to either honor your deceased loved one(s) or to help you lift your spirits.
  3. Attend a support group or spend time with others in your circle who have been through similar situations.
  4. Friends, family and Nurse Navigators can support those going through difficult times: recognize and honor the grief, send a note, offer a listening ear, offer support resources, ask how you can help.
